How many balcony solar systems are there in Germany? The most reliable answer isn't in a survey, it's in a government database. As of 19 May 2026, exactly 1,327,455 plug-in solar devices were registered as operational in the Marktstammdatenregister, the German Federal Network Agency's master data registry, with a combined 1,381 megawatt-peak. That count comes from GFK Solar's reading of the registry, not from us.
On 13 August 2026 a widely syndicated press release announced the jump past 1.3 million. The number had been sitting in the registry for weeks by then.
Marktstammdatenregister and balcony solar: what actually gets counted
The MaStR is the Federal Network Agency's official registry for every power-generating installation in Germany, from coal plants down to a plug-in panel on a terraced-house balcony. Every grid-connected device has to be listed regardless of output, and according to the German consumer body Verbraucherzentrale, within one month of commissioning.
Since 1 April 2024 that takes four data points. Module count, capacity, commissioning date, and whether a battery is attached. Before then you filed the full PV dataset. That one procedural change is where the curve bends upward.
From 48 to 538 megawatts in three years
How many new balcony solar systems joined the registry each year shows up clearly in the installed capacity added:

One detail the celebratory coverage skips: the same analysis puts Q1 2026 roughly 14% below the same quarter a year earlier. The installed base keeps growing. The pace doesn't.
2025 was still the record year. 429,808 new systems, which Energyload works out to one every 73 seconds on average.
Where the systems actually are
How many balcony solar systems exist in each state comes down to two different metrics: total capacity and systems per head.

The two rankings tell different stories. North Rhine-Westphalia leads on capacity mostly because that's where the people are. Per head, Lower Saxony leads at roughly four times Hamburg's rate, and the standout municipality is Wunstorf near Hanover, according to GFK Solar. They put it down to a local subsidy scheme plus a lot of single-family housing. Plausible enough. Nobody has actually tested it.
The undercount is an estimate, not a fact
The figure of 3 million circulates constantly online. Where does it come from? Researchers at HTW Berlin estimated in early 2025, cited via strom-report.com, that anywhere from 1.5 to 4 million systems could be running, and three million is nothing more than that range's midpoint.
That's a model, not a count. It implies 50 to 80% of devices may be operating unregistered. Nobody has actually counted that, only modeled it. Which is why every number in this article is the registry figure, not the estimate.
Every fifth device now has a battery
Roughly 20 to 21% of registered balcony systems have a battery logged against them, per Energyload and strom-report.com for 2026. Three years ago, hardly anyone would have mentioned it.
"The question has shifted. Three years ago it was about whether such a device was worth it at all. Today it's about whether storage is included," says Alexander Weipprecht, managing director of Provimedia GmbH, in the press release dated 13 August 2026 (translated from the German original).

What this means for you
Registering isn't optional. Skip the MaStR entry and you risk losing EEG feed-in compensation plus a fine under section 95 of the EnWG, according to Verbraucherzentrale. What it costs you: a one-time account, four data points, no fee.
